FOR MUMS, DADS & PARENTS TO BE

-Rub base oils, sweet almond or calendula oil into your bum, tummy and thighs, to reduce the impact of stretch marks from month five until 3 months after the birth. Add mandarin, grapefruit, lemon & sweet orange essential oils to further enhance the positive effects. Use 2 drops of your chosen oils to 5mls of your base oil.

-Rub coconut oil into your perineum towards the end of your term, to make it more supple and easier to stretch during labour. By week 38 you can add rose otto oil to this (2 drops for every 5ml coconut oil).

-Try lying on your back with your thighs at right angles to the floor, and your shins supported on a sofa or chair to help ease back pain. You can do this up to 20 minutes a day to relax & ease tension.

-A happy mum generally means a happy child & often an easier birth. Take time out to de-stress; e.g. have a massage, shiatsu, enjoy a long relaxing warm bath, put your feet up, or watch a sunset.

-Try some gentle exercises. Swimming is useful, as is yoga and tai chi among others.

-Keep your body well oiled and healthy. Drink plenty of water; you're drinking for 2 now! 3 to 5 pints a day may mean you pee more, but surely this is a small price to pay to keep your bodies flushed out and healthy.

-Morning sickness! The first step is to take a look at your diet and make sure you're not eating any fried or highly processed foods.Research has shown that people with unhealthy diets are much more prone to having morning sickness. Apparently, it is the body's way of getting rid of toxins that could harm the baby. Lots of fresh fruit, vegetables (preferably organic) and homemade food; strictly no ready meals.

-Keeping your blood sugar levels balanced is important too. Smaller meals more often may help. Try eating a dry biscuit in the morning. Sitting down after you have eaten anything can help too. Finally a little honey throughout the day may also help.

-Ask your health food shop about teas that can reduce sickness safely during pregnancy. Acupressure has also successfully reduced morning sickness in some. Acu[uncture 2-3 times a week can help. Or you could try Sea Bands, a remedy using acupressure as a way to control nausea and vomiting in pregnancy. They can be purchased from chemists or online (www.sea-band.co.uk)

-Crab apple Bach flower remedy has been useful for some, & is safe for you & your baby.

-The homeopathic remedy ipecac 6c has been helpful in easing morning sickness for some. Available from your health food store or see your homeopath for a constitutional remedy that suits you.

-Taking up to 20mg of vitamin B6 3 x day can help with severe vomiting during pregnancy. Reduce this towards the end of your term to ensure ample breast milk production. Consult a nutritionist or your local health food shop for advice.

-Also consult a dietician or nutritionist if you think your iron, zinc or vitamin C levels are low. Low levels of zinc have been related to long labour, and you should not take too much vitamin C either, so talking to an appropriate health professional is always recommended.

-If you are thinking of having a caesarean for anything other than health reasons, think again! A study has found that women who have their first baby by caesarean section are twice as likely to suffer a stillbirth with their second. (source WDDTY newsletter 290104.)

-Avoid or cut down on caffeine found in tea, coffee and some fizzy drinks for a safer, healthier pregnancy. Babies born to mums who have a high caffeine intake during pregnancy, are more likely to be jittery, suffer with colic & have difficulty settling.

-Smoking while pregnant is not only detrimental to both your health, but increases the chances of your baby developing hyperactivity & psychiatric illness later on in their life.

-Aspirin increases the risk of miscarriage. (source WDDTY newsletter 301003)

-It is best to leave at least 6 months between having babies to avoid complications. (source, British Medical Journal, 2003; 327: 313=6)

-Dr. Michael Odent of the Primal Health Research Centre has produced evidence that if a child is exposed to opiates via their mother's womb they are more likely to become chemically dependent adults. Likewise if mum is on tranquillisers during pregnancy, the child is more like to develop a need to boost their happy hormones artificially, by becoming demanding for sugar, chocolate and cola; in other words an addictive personality in the making.

-Drinking raspberry leaf tea in the last weeks of pregnancy helps labour

-To encourage contractions, ease pain & stress; rub grapeseed oil with clary sage, jasmin and frankincense essential oils into your back, tummy and feet. It makes a real difference! In addition, resting before you enter the pushing stage of labour has made an easier birth for some, giving you a chance to recharge your batteries.

AND AFTER THE BIRTH...

 

-Use rose, geranium, and bergamot in a carrier oil like grapeseed after you have given birth to help prevent the baby blues setting in.

-Avoid separating from your child too soon if they have been used to being with you. Gently break the bond. This starts to happen at 40 weeks old. They are more likely to develop into healthy adults, less likely to succumb to mental health & behavioural problems connected to feelings of abandonment.

-Ensure you & your baby get plenty of fresh air & sunshine, both while you are pregnant & once you have given birth. This means you will be topping up your vitamin D levels, helping your baby develop strong bones & good mental health too.

- Giving your child just 20 minutes a day outside, with their face & hands exposed is enough for older infants to obtain all the vitamin D they need. (source WDDTY, Heather Welford, National Childbirth Trust, Aug 2003)

-Research shows that breast-feeding gives your baby a strong immune system, helping reduce the chances of them developing ailments like asthma, eczema, heart disease in later life. Generally it is best not to exceed breast-feeding for more than 2 years. If you do have a problem breast feeding, again according to researchers it is best to use goat's milk as cow's milk can increase sensitivity to dairy products in later life & increase the risk of developing diabetes type I.

-Lemongrass, sweet fennel & jasmin essential oils help increase breast milk production, but only use these after you have given birth.

-Chamomile essential oil in grapeseed oil will help ease teething pain, reduce inflammation, & encourage sleep naturally when applied externally to areas of pain for your little one.

-Avoid using any oils derived from nut or wheat sources under the age of 6 years, as this can encourage nut/wheat allergies.

-Children's nightmares can be relieved by 1 drop of lemon essential oil and 4 drops of benzoin essential oil in 10mls of grapeseed oil rubbed into their feet, chest & temples.

-Massaging your baby regularly is not only healthy but encourages a good bond between you. Use gentle upward sweeping motions, as you apply a little grapeseed oil and make it fun!

-Children with stuffy noses or colds will benefit from using ravensara essential oil. 1 drop in 10mls of grapeseed rubbed onto their feet and chest will ease symptoms & boost their immunity.

-Children introduced to cereals too early on in life, have an increased risk of developing diabetes i.e. between 1 & 3 months, & also at 7 months plus. Researchers say that the ideal time to introduce cereals therefore, is between 4 & 6 months. (source Prevalence of Diabetes: Journal of American Medical Association 2003; Diabetes & Cereals; Journal of American Medical Association 2003.)

-Hyperactivity can be reduced by including magnesium rich foods in your child's diet e.g. cocoa (but with no sugar!), wholegrains & rice, dried legumes

-It can also be reduced by avoiding caffeine, sugar , & aspartame; a sweetener.

SAFE USE OF ESSENTIAL OILS DURING PREGNANCY

-Do not use jasmin, cedarwood or clary sage until labour.

-Do not use palmarosa in the first 16 weeks of your pregnancy or if you have had difficulties in a previous pregnancy.

-Do not use geranium in the first 28 weeks of pregnancy or if you have had difficulties in a previous pregnancy.

-Do not use rose in the first 38 weeks of pregnancy, or if you have ever had a miscarriage.

-Do not use any essential oils in the first 4 months of your pregnancy.

-Do not use any of the following oils during any part of your pregnancy:

*basil bay *camphor cedarwood

chamomile cinnamon comfrey *fennel

*hyssop *juniper berry, *sweet marjoram melissa

myrrh *oregano *peppermint *rosemary

*sage *thyme *valerian

-oils that are safe to enjoy using during pregnancy after the first 4 months are as follows:-

bergamot frankincense ginger grapefruit

lemon lime #mandarin may chang

neroli niaouli #sweet orange patchouli

#petitgrain ravensara rosewood *sandalwood ti-tree vetiver *ylang ylang

ALWAYS CONSULT YOUR AROMATHERAPIST BEFORE USE OF ANY OILS TO ENSURE THEY ARE SAFE FOR YOU TO USE. *SOME OF THE ABOVE OILS SHOULD NOT BE USED IF YOU SUFFER WITH EPILEPSY, KIDNEY, LIVER OR BLOOD PRESSURE PROBLEMS.

# = safe to use after 3-4 months for nausea & morning sickness. Apply some drops of each to a tissue & inhale. Pop some on your pillow at night if it helps.
